Austin Foss joined Spotswood Sansom & Sansbury LLC in 2026 following two years with the Supreme Court of Alabama. After graduating from Cumberland School of Law in 2024, Austin clerked for then Justice Sarah H. Stewart and continued working as her law clerk once she transitioned to Chief Justice in January 2025. After completing his clerkship, Austin was appointed as the Assistant Reporter of Decisions, an opportunity that allowed him to develop working relationships with the appellate judges of Alabama while honing his legal writing abilities.
While attending Cumberland, Austin served as the Editor in Chief of Volume 47 of the American Journal of Trial Advocacy, a class representative on the Student Bar Association, a co-founder Cumberland’s chapter of OutLaw, and a member on the Harvey S. Jackson Excellence in Teaching Committee. Austin earned his Bachelor of Arts from the University of Alabama with a degree in history, specializing in racial terrorism in Alabama. Based on his work on this topic, Austin was awarded the Summersell Undergraduate Research Fellowship of History in 2017.
Austin has previously worked in various public interest roles including jobs in Alabama prison and criminal justice reform, education in Alabama’s Black Belt, and substance use disorder affecting college students.
